Land Reclamation

PUT IT TO ECONOMIC USE

Reduce the socio-economic and environmental impact.

In Africa, some of the most fertile land is not put to economic use due to the effect of landmines as well as disorganised mineral extraction. Landmines not only cause tragic accidents, they are a barrier to development as they constrain communities by denying them access to fertile land.

Hilversum’s mine action is purely geared towards reclamation of agricultural land to reduce the socio-economic and environmental impact of landmines by searching, scientifically destroying them and freeing the land. This process is undertaken using an integrated approach and is generally difficult, dangerous, time consuming and costly.

A landmine is an explosive device that is buried or placed hidden on the ground. For instance, an antipersonnel landmine is designed to specifically target people and are triggered by a variety of methods, most commonly pressure, either direct or by a wire, and are more often “victim activated”. This infestation hampers economic recovery and development mostly in countries emerging from conflict where farmlands are cut off from basic necessities and prevented from using land for agricultural activities.

Land mines

Leftover landmines and explosives remain active long after hostilities have ceased causing fear, killing indiscriminately and hampering the development of people and regions. In some unique cases in peaceful environments, there are other explosive materials such as unexploded artillery shells, hand grenades, mortars, rockets or airdropped bombs and ammunition commonly referred to as ‘Explosive Remnants of War’ (ERW’s), which also include ‘Unexploded Ordnance’ (UXO) and ‘Abandoned Explosive Ordnance’ (AXO) occasioned by slight oversight in military exercises.
